I am shocked and appalled like so many others about the recent GD changes. Ugh. Greed is so ugly. I thank god every single week that we Deadheads here in the LA area get to hear the BEST live Dead music, yes, actually LIVE... no, not played by the originals, but by the 19-year old(!) Cubensis, which, yeah, is a "cover band" but they are the highest quality musicians, improvising (not recreating, a'la DSO) the Dead music and re-energizing the scene. We here are blessed, as they play TWICE a week, and we Heads get to convene and share our love and experiences, and, now, TRADE our CDs! The online community is a great thing, but it's nice to get together in person.

MORE of the talented folks out there need to get to making the music and inspiring the scene themselves, since our "leaders" have obviously strayed off the Path. Seek each other out, and those with the talent? PLAY!! :) That is the answer I have found... I hope more, all around the country, the world, will find similar solace! If you're in the LA area and want to come join our community, find out more at

This is by far one of the best Grateful Dead "cover" bands I have ever seen. I put cover in quotes because that is not really what they are. They are one degree of separation from the real deal. These guys, who by the way have been doing this on a regular basis since before Jerry died (1986 was when they were founded), are bringing us lucky folks in Los Angeles and opportunity not only to hear the music but to hear it's evolution into something new and fresh as it was every time the GD got on stage. Jerry never played the show the same way and neither do these guys. They aren't reading TAB sheets and lyrics downloaded from or any number of places online you can find Dead tabs and lyrics, they are taking the foundation and building a piece of musical architechture with the same ferver and creativity that Jerry and the boys did for 30 years. If you want to really hear the Dead played by someone other than the Dead (cuz I think this may be the end of the road) then come out to hear Cubensis. Even better, if you want Cubensis to come to your town, let them know...they'd love to do it. Oh and occasionally they are visted by guest artists the likes of Chris Robinson (Black Crowes), Vince Welnick (Tubes, GD), John Molo (Phil & Friends), Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule/GD) and Barney Doyle (Mickey Hart's Band) to name a few.

Peace and Love,

The Other Billy Sunday
